The 96th Academy Awards are set to air on March 10th, 2024, otherwise known as next week!
Film Flavor wants to know: Which Oscar-nominated films have left you famished, and which have quenched your thirst?
Oscar-Nominated Appetites
For someone who works in the film industry and logically knows what films are likely to win the Oscars, I have a horrible track record when it comes to Oscar predictions bets, ballots, and polls.
It’s not because I don’t know who will win, I just have such high hopes about who I think should win and my brain flies out the window. The whole award season ordeal can be a little depressing to me for this reason: Those who I believe deserve recognition are all too often snubbed or forgotten entirely.
Still, I can’t help but glue my eyes to the television when someone like Joaquin Phoenix or Olivia Coleman makes an acceptance speech. Like it or not, film industry award shows like the Oscars are an important barometer for the cultural moment. And the Academy Awards appreciates the magic of the movies like no other. I can’t foresee a day where the Oscars aren’t ultimately fascinating, if frustrating, to watch.
This year, via the official Film Flavor 2024 Oscars Poll, I’d like to know which Oscar-nominated films you think will win, of course. But more importantly, which films do you think had the best food and drink? What snacks did the Best Picture nominees make you crave?
Take the poll here and let me know! All results and findings will be shared in next week’s edition of Film Flavor, the day after the Oscars.
If you’re curious to hear what your friends are snacking on, feel free to share this poll with whomever you’d like.
Will those with the biggest food-in-film appetites (Film Flavor subscribers + friends?) have the most accurate Oscar predictions? We’re about to find out! (Let’s show ‘em what we’ve got!)
2024 Oscar Viewing Party Snacks + Sips: The Film Flavor Roundup
One thing about me: I like my recipes easy. My search terms regularly include phrases like “easy”, “one pot”, and “under 30 minutes.” It is with this work-shy spirit that I concocted a list of some quick recipes to throw together for your very own Oscar viewing party.
Barbie
This Barbie Malibu Mojito from Empress Gin seems like one of the easiest crowd-pleasing cocktails to whip up and start your Oscar-viewing party off right.
Oppenheimer
In my humble opinion, this Apple Cinnamon Popcorn recipe from Tara Teaspoon would be the perfect ode to Oppenheimer. (A popped kernel is basically the atomic mushroom cloud of snack foods, am I right?)
The Holdovers
When it comes to The Holdovers, one of the most food-filled Best Picture nominees of 2024, we mustn't forget the scene where Dominic Sessa eats ice cream from an industrial-sized carton. Pay homage to this scene by picking up individual-sized ice cream cartons, like these Ben & Jerry’s Mini Cups available at many US grocery store chains.
Of course, if you want to serve sips of Jim Beam or fire up a cherry jubilee on the hood of your car, be my guest! Harry & David has a recipe that looks surprisingly doable!
Anatomy of a Fall
A few weeks ago, someone on Reddit suggested whipping up an Anatomy of a Farfalle main dish for your Oscar viewing party, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Personally, I’ll be making this Vegan Brown Butter Walnut and Tarragon Farfalle pasta recipe by Best of Vegan.
Poor Things
Film Flavor readers already know what I’m going to suggest: Portuguese Custard Tarts! These will require a little prep, hence the time-saving options above.
Bonus: Mark Ruffalo Buffalo Chicken Sliders from A Flavor Journal! (I’ll be subbing in a vegan cauliflower option!)
